Highlights Magazine

Highlights MagazineRaise your hand if you remember Highlights Magazine! I see you over there… anyone who grew up in my era definitely remembers this magazine. In fact it probably looked a lot like the photo to the left didn’t it?  It was often found in the school library, doctors offices and if you were lucky, your parents had it delivered to your house!

I have fond memories of reading Highlights at school, it always had something that would make me laugh, something that would challenge me with a puzzle and something I would later share with my parents or friends, a trio of educational fun and I loved looking forward to the next issue.

Recently I received an advertisement for Highlights in a parenting magazine and had a brief bout of nostalgia, I was pretty excited to learn that Highlights has now expanded to include Hello & High Five Magazine, geared towards kids 0-2 and 2-6 years old. I jumped at the chance to share a love from my childhood with Alivia.

I have a pretty strong willed child, when she sees something she wants it’s a bit tricky to talk her out of it.. when her copies of High Five arrived in the mail I had to battle her to let me have them long enough to take some pictures! Immediately she was diving into the October issue with eager eyes, counting the pumpkins, finding the differences in the photos and asking us to tell her the pop out story.

Each monthly issue brings 40 pages of read-along stories and poems, simple crafts and recipes, learning games, puzzles for beginners and other activities that can set your child on the path to becoming a lifelong learner.

Every page reinforces skills that prepare preschoolers for reading, math and other areas of learning. High Five also offers positive role models and constructive activities that help build character and self-confidence.

As an added perk (as if you need more to love these books), each High-Five includes an added Bonus in each edition; from mini-books, matching and board games, there’s something you can remove from the book and play as a family.

I really appreciate that especially with High Five, the font is larger and the reading level is right on par with where preschoolers and those just starting to learn to read are. I also like the added Read Aloud in English and Spanish story, we’re huge Dora fans in our house and it’s always fun to learn some new words together.

Alivia Reading Highlights

We love that Highlights High Five fosters independence but also encourages family time. We live in a very busy technology age and sometimes we just need to put everything aside, sit down and read together. Why not offer your child a surprise next time you sit down to enjoy Highlights together and download the Kindness Certificate to surprise them with? Tucking it into their magazine to find with a special message would be an encouraging surprise.

Instead of offering a one-time gift at Christmas, why not offer the gift that keeps on giving? With subscriptions available starting at $48 a year your gift recipient will have something to enjoy all year round! We’ll definitely be renewing our subscription this holiday season.
