Yesterday, I had the incredible privilege of attending an exclusive Netflix event in Vancouver for their latest release: Lonely Planet. The celebration took place at the fully booked Michelin-recommended Moltaqa Moroccan, a restaurant that set the perfect stage for an evening of excitement and indulgence. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and the intoxicating aromas of Moroccan spices, making it impossible not to dive into the night with enthusiasm.
The space was beautifully curated for the occasion, featuring plush pillows, stunning light fixtures, and even a sleek motorcycle for a fun photo-op! The atmosphere was spot-on, and my friends and I wasted no time chatting about the movie while savouring every bite of the delicious nibbles on offer. It was the perfect night to gush over Lonely Planet and immerse ourselves in this magical feeling location.
Lonely Planet: Not Just A Movie
Netflix’s Lonely Planet is not just a movie—it’s an emotional and visual feast that combines stunning landscapes, heartfelt performances, and a story of two souls finding each other when they need it most. Starring Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern, the film follows Owen (Hemsworth), a wandering traveler, and Katherine (Dern), a writer at a crossroads, as they cross paths in remote corners of the world. Their chance encounter slowly unfolds into a profound connection, and it’s through the film’s delicate interplay of food, travel, and soul-searching that their relationship is nurtured.
One of the movie’s unexpected stars is the way food serves as a metaphor for the healing process both characters undergo. From humble meals shared at a dusty roadside café to beautifully plated dishes in an exotic, off-the-beaten-path restaurant, each meal represents a step toward vulnerability and trust. Hemsworth’s character, a man of few words, finds comfort in the simple act of eating with others, using it as a way to connect with the world around him—something he struggles to do with people. As the two characters begin to share meals and spend time exploring together, the barriers between them start to dissolve.
Liam Hemsworth delivers a deeply introspective performance, one that allows him to shed the action-star persona he’s best known for. His portrayal of Owen is quiet but powerful—his loneliness palpable as he seeks solace in the far corners of the world. Meanwhile, Laura Dern is masterful as Katherine, a woman who is all at once broken and resilient. As always, Dern brings a layered, nuanced performance that makes Katherine’s journey of self-discovery as captivating as the locations they traverse. Her character’s emotional range, conveyed often through silence or small gestures, highlights the depth of the story.
Visually, the film is a work of art. From sun-soaked beaches to misty mountain ranges, Lonely Planet makes full use of its stunning locations to create an almost meditative atmosphere. Each scene feels deliberate as if inviting the viewer to pause and reflect alongside the characters. The beauty of Lonely Planet lies in its ability to seamlessly blend these moments of travel, food, and romance into a rich narrative that touches on themes of isolation, healing, and the search for meaning.
The meals they share throughout the film become symbolic—food as nourishment not just for the body, but for the soul. It’s during these moments that Owen and Katherine, both wounded by life in their ways, begin to let their guards down, making their journey not just one of travel, but one of emotional rebirth.
In the end, Lonely Planet is more than just a romance or a travelogue. It’s a beautifully woven tale of two people who find comfort and healing in the most unlikely places—through food, through landscapes, and ultimately, through each other. It’s a film that lingers with you long after the credits roll, reminding us all that sometimes the simplest things and connections you make are what bring us back to life.
